Tom Hopper scored twice as 10-man Colchester moved out of the relegation places with a spirited 3-2 victory at play-off chasing Crawley.

The visitors went into the game boosted by a bumper following of nearly 1,000 fans, boss Danny Cowley having made a passionate appeal for increased support.

Crawley midfielder Liam Kelly fired against the top of the bar before the Reds went behind after 21 minutes when Ellis Iandolo crossed for Hopper to turn the ball in from close range.

In a dramatic end to the opening half, Crawley equalised after 42 minutes when Klaidi Lolos scored for the third game running.

But Colchester hit back to regain the lead two minutes later, goalkeeper Corey Addai giving the ball away which allowed Jay Mingi to cross for Cameron McGeehan to score into an empty net.

The U's made it 3-1 a minute after the break as Hopper stroked in his second past the helpless Addai.

Colchester were reduced to 10 men two minutes from time after substitute Samson Tovide, only on the field eight minutes, received a straight red card for an off-the-ball incident.

Harry Forster headed in a cross from Kelly in the seventh minute of added time but Colchester held on for a vital win which lifted them one point above Sutton.

    What on earth was Tovide doing? Does he not know the art of constraint in our perilous position, particularly at the end of a match? Good player, but needs to control his temper. We need all the players we've got, not losing them to off the ball incidents.

    Same old, same old. The Reds do not do SHOULD win matches. It's always been the same. The farce surrounding Colchester's second goal was the worst examole of "After you Claude" I have ever seen.

    From what I have seen recently there is not much between the top and bottom of this league.
    If Col Utd can survive this season, the future with the Cowley brothers looks bright.

    I've been confident for a while that we would take advantage of our games in hand and move out of the drop zone. We have a manager duo & quite a few players that are too good for the National League. The bottom two will stay there, condolences to Sutton and absolutely no condolences to FGR.

    Oh dear, no comment from one of the regular contributors, has wormtongue nothing to say? A word on the ref, I saw my first game in 1968, so congrats to today's ref on reaching an all time low in terms of uselessness. Might as well have just had a red shirt on. We won against 13 including the lino who got Samson sent off.

    Once a season I go to a Colchester game as my late mum was born there. So this season it was Crawley 25 miles and £2 on the bus! Col U are good enough for the play off not dodging relegation every season. They need to stop ambling along until Jan every season thinking they will win next week. They have a proper stadium and the town need to get behind them and sell out every home game.

    Crawley were atrocious today and gifted Colchester their goals.
    That said, Colchester took their chances and wanted it/deserved it much more than Crawley
    Disappointed for us but not by the impact the result has on the relegation places

    If Colchester need a helping hand we gave it to them today. Two of their goals were gifts by absolute lousy defending. Luckily teams around us lost so that's good. Need to raise our game against Barrow on Tuesday night.
