Ex-Town Defender Facing Four-Year Ban
Tuesday, 26th Feb 2019 09:44

Former Town defender Josh Yorwerth is reported to be facing a four-year ban from football after deliberately avoiding drug testers having taken cocaine the previous weekend.

According to the Daily Mail, Yorwerth, 23, currently with Peterborough United, admitted to an FA disciplinary hearing at Wembley last week that he took the drug in September last year and a few days later failed to answer the door when drug testers arrived at his home.

A positive test for cocaine would have led to only a three-month ban and he would have remained anonymous, however, the former Wales U21 international believed it would have resulted in a two-year sanction.

Avoiding a test is taken much more seriously by the authorities and Yorwerth was banned for the mandatory four years, although he has leave to appeal against the severity of the sentence.

The rules relating to players failing to take tests were tightened up following Rio Ferdinand’s eight-month ban back in 2003.

Yorwerth was with the Blues between June 2015 and June 2016 making three starts, all in the League Cup, and scoring one goal on his debut at home to Stevenage.

Having joined Town from Cardiff City, Bridgend-born Yorwerth moved on to Crawley from the Blues, then signed for Peterborough in the summer of 2018.

[Update] Peterborough have now announced that they have sacked Yorwerth, issuing a statement: “Peterborough United Football Club have been working with Josh Yorwerth over the past few months alongside the PFA to try and help him overcome a number of personal issues.

“The board of directors have been very supportive of him during this case and a representative of the football club has been in constant dialogue with Josh throughout the whole process.

“However, following the two charges made against Josh (one for evading an anti-doping test and the other for taking cocaine) and the four-year ban issued, the football club wishes to confirm that his contract will be terminated.

“The football club wishes Josh well with his recovery and for his future and hope he continues to get the support he needs from those in a position to help.”

While he was stupid, a 4 year ban is ridiculously harsh, given that Rio Ferdinand, for example, was given 8 months for skipping a drugs test, 3 of which were during the summer.

I'm not really sure what Forever Blue is saying there, the lad started 3 games, scored in 1 and also played quite well against a top quality Manchester United side, just never got given a proper chance.

Sadly I think people are very quick to judge, and even quicker to condemn! Let's not forget in the past some of the Club's greatest ever players were drug addicts. The difference was they chose a socially acceptable drug....ALCOHOL.

I suppose the question to be asked here is why was he taking coke?

As a professional footballer, knowing that random drug testing was a real possibility yet still willing to take the risk, throws up all sorts of questions regarding his state of mind and mental health. It's undoubtedly a tough world, with fine margins between success and failure in the pro environment.

Of course he was doubly stupid, possibly the result of other less visible issues that many in the game face - thankfully, though, without recourse to drugs as their solution of choice. (And in his lin line of work, using Cocaine for recreational purposes isn't an option or excuse). Let's himself, his team mates, club and supporters down. Great pity.

Posh seems to be the kind of club where this goes on (hopefully not going to be sued now). Paul Taylor springs to mind.

.......... should be far more random Drug Tests across all Sports - banned substances, should equal a lifetime ban, that would eliminate it completely. No excuses.

We all make mistakes in life. They ahould be asking him why and then giveing him education. A four year ban it's too much in my option. If he was world famous it would be about 12-18 months ban.

#Neweranewme. Agreed. Its spuid comments like that by so many. No surprise the plan to have a 1st team of homegrown players went out the window before it started. How any player, at any team, is deemed awfull after 3 games is just unbelievable. And is no surprise we cant bring younger players through. And the very yougngest want to jump ship to go to clubs at the 1st opportunity. Or slightly older ones would prefer to go on loan.

If I think back to the 23 year old version of me I was intelligent, personable and talented; but largely wasted by idleness and excessive drinking. I managed to come back from it, I hope that he does.
