Ex-Rotherham United and Leeds United boss emerges as candidate for Oldham Athletic

Steve Evans has emerged as a candidate for the vacant Oldham Athletic job.

The 56-year-old is being considered by the Latics’ hierarchy, according to journalist Alan Nixon on Twitter.

The League Two side are in the hunt for a new boss after Paul Scholes resigned last week after less than a month in charge.

Evans is available after he was sacked by League One outfit Peterborough United in January and could now have an opportunity to return to management.

The Scottish boss is vastly experienced in the Football League and has participated in just over 900 games as a manager.

He started his managerial career in non-league with spells at Stamford and Boston United before moving to Crawley Town in 2007. Evans guided them to promotion to League One in 2011.

Evans then moved to Rotherham United in April 2012 and guided the Millers to back-to-back promotions from the fourth tier to the Championship during his time in South Yorkshire. He kept them up in the second tier in their first campaign back.

Leeds United appointed Evans as their manager in 2015. The Whites finished 13th in the Championship under his guidance but he was later sacked at the end of the 2015/16 season.

Spells at Mansfield Town and Peterborough have followed for Evans but he hasn’t managed to reach the heights he achieved during his days at Rotherham. Could the chance to manage Oldham now persuade him to return to the dugout?
