Blues in EFL Trophy Group With Crawley and Gillingham
Monday, 17th Aug 2020 16:32

Town have been named alongside Crawley and Gillingham in Group B of the Southern section of the EFL Trophy.

They will learn their final group opponent, an U21 side from a club with a category one academy, tomorrow at 1.30pm when the draw takes place on talkSPORT 2.

The Blues will play either Crawley or Gillingham at home and the other away, while the U21 club, which will be one of Arsenal, Brighton & Hove Albion, Chelsea, Fulham, City, Southampton or West Ham United, will travel to Portman Road.

The EFL prevents U21s sides from facing their local rivals in the group stage so Town won't be be up against Norwich's youngsters.

The EFL Trophy, last season the Leasing.com Trophy but with that sponsorship having ended, gets under way in the midweek prior to the Blues’ League One opener on Saturday 12th September.

Following the September start, the second group match will be played on 6th/7th October and the third on 10th/11th November. The round of 32 will be played on 8th/9th January, the round of 16 on 12th/13th January, the semi-finals on 16th/17th February and the final on 14th March.

Last season the Blues reached the quarter-finals before being beaten 2-1 at Exeter City.

The draw for round one of the Carabao Cup also takes place tomorrow, live on Sky Sports News from 10am.

Excuse my ignorance, but why are Nodge U21s in it when they're a Championship outfit?

To answer my own question, it's cat 1 academies regardless of division, thought it was just Premier League sides.

Pointless competition! Should have been scrapped this season

Allowing rivals to play each other is possibly the one thing that might have made this competition worthwhile.

How very uninspiring

If rivals not allowed to play then why are Orient, Wimbledon and Charlton in the same group? All London derbies. Similarly Blackpool and Accrington, or Salford and Rochdale...

Probably should have phrased that differently, U21 sides aren't allowed to play rivals. Will amend.

Anyone else couldn't really give a stuff about cup competitions ( especially this season)?
I'm only really interested in one thing - promotion.

Makes sense, Thanks Phil.

Do the EFL not realise that this is the year to limit cup competitions. With most clubs not wanting to finish the last season and crowds unlikely for months, I fail to see the rational for this going ahead.

No problem social distancing fans in this competition -

If we draw West Ham can we swap to away and get a Ground Tick ?

Is it correct that the Trophy “The round of 32 will be played on 8th/9th January” will be a Friday/Saturday game?
And that there will be no ¼ final Trophy round?

Think the group stages of this will be played asap so more league and important cup games are more likely to be played in front of a crowd.

Why can't the group stage games be played during the international breaks. Instead, our guys will be subjected to gruelling fixture schedules either side of the breaks. Those gruelling schedules could be a major contributor to the long injury lists of a lot of EFL clubs.

Sorry to be picky Phil but there's just the three errors here. Round of 32 is 8th/9th December not January. You've missed the Quarter-Finals which are 2nd/3rd February. Last season we lost to Exeter in the last 16 not the quarter final.
